Prinsbisdom Toul
Toul was een tot de Boven-Rijnse Kreits behorend bisdom binnen het Heilige Roomse Rijk.
Mogelijk bestond het bisdom Toul al in de vierde eeuw. In de Frankische tijd werd het bij de kerkprovincie Trier gevoegd. In 1261 kocht de bisschop het graafschap Toul. Nadat de voogdij in 1286 aan het hertogdom Lotahringen was gekomen, verloor de bisschop veel van zijn wereldlijke macht. De stad Toul ontwikkelde zich tot vrije rijksstad en de bisschop verlegde zijn zetel naar Liverdon. Het domkapittel had weinig invloed, want tot het einde der middeleeuwen benoemde de paus de bisschop rechtstreeks.
In 1552 droegen de protestantse rijksvorsten het rijksvicariaat over de rijkssteden Metz, Toul en Verdun wederrechterlijk over aan de koning van Frankrijk. Frankrijk bezette daarop de drie steden en maakte vervolgens van de drie prinsbisdommen een protectoraat. In paragraaf 70 van de Vrede van Münster van 1648 stond de keizer de drie bisdommen en de drie rijkssteden definitief aan Frankrijk af.

The Diocese of Toul
The Diocese of Toul was a Roman Catholic diocese seated at Toul in present-day France. It existed from 365 until 1824. From 1048 until 1552 (de jure until 1648), it was also a state of the Holy Roman Empire.
The Bishopric was located at the western edge of the Holy Roman Empire; it was bordered by France, the Duchy of Bar, and the Duchy of Lorraine. It was annexed to France by King Henry II in 1552; this was recognized by the Holy Roman Empire in the Peace of Westphalia of 1648. It then was part of the province of the Three Bishoprics.
After the Duchy of Lorraine also became part of France in the 18th century, the Diocese of Toul was merged with the Diocese of Nancy into the Diocese of Nancy-Toul.
The Diocese of Toul belonged to the ecclesiastical province of the Archbishop of Trier.
